ABB Robotics, a leader in robotics and automation technology, has revealed plans to construct a new campus in Sweden. Spanning 65,000 square meters, the campus will serve as a modern workplace for ABB Robotics’ 1,300-strong workforce in the region. The state-of-the-art facility will consist of a new factory, offices, a research and development center, an experience center, and a training center for customers and visitors.
One notable feature of the new factory will be the incorporation of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), which will play a crucial role in transporting materials and products within the facility. This investment aims to enhance efficiency and streamline operations by seamlessly connecting the warehouse, assembly stations, and assembly departments.
The construction of the campus is expected to commence in 2024 and will replace the existing nine separate buildings that have grown organically since 1974. By consolidating the robotics operations into a single, integrated space, ABB Robotics aims to foster cross-functional synergies and optimize its production capabilities.
The new campus will serve as the European hub for ABB Robotics, offering customers AI-enabled collaborative and industrial robots, as well as digital solutions to support flexible automation. This move aligns with the company’s “local for local” production strategy, enabling the manufacturing of products closer to the customer. Currently, approximately 95% of the robots sold by ABB in the region are manufactured locally.
The investment in the new campus is driven by customer demand and projected market growth. By expanding its production capacity by 50%, ABB Robotics aims to meet the increasing demands of the European market, which is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7% through 2027.
Once completed, ABB will have invested $450 million in its three robotics facilities since 2018. This includes the existing mega factory in Shanghai, which serves customers in Asia, and the Auburn Hills facility in the United States, supporting the Americas market.
The new campus will not only enhance ABB’s robotics and automation leadership globally but also foster close collaboration with customers and partners. It will provide a safe and functional environment for the development of robotics and automation solutions, as well as serve as a platform for testing and experimentation with the latest automation innovations.
