ABB Invests $280 Million in New Robotics Campus in Västerås, Sweden

ABB, a global leader in robotics and automation, has announced a significant investment of $280 million to build a state-of-the-art ABB Robotics European Campus in Västerås, Sweden. The new campus will replace the existing robotics facilities at the site and is expected to open in late 2026.

The Robotics Campus will serve as the hub for ABB Robotics’ offerings in Europe, providing customers with AI-enabled collaborative and industrial robots, as well as digital solutions for flexible automation. The investment is driven by customer demand and projected market growth, and it will strengthen ABB’s capabilities in serving European customers with locally manufactured products.

With this new campus, ABB aims to enhance its robotics and automation leadership globally. The facility will increase production capacity by 50% and support the growing European market, which is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of seven percent through 2027. This investment is part of ABB’s commitment to its “local for local” production strategy.

Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation Business Area, emphasized the significance of the new campus in supporting European customers in their investment in robotics and AI. He stated that the Robotics Campus will enable ABB to serve its customers more efficiently and unlock the full potential of automation in various sectors, including automotive, electronics, logistics, healthcare, e-commerce, and pharmaceuticals.

The 65,000 m2 campus will consist of a new factory, offices, a research and development center, an experience center, and a training center. It will also feature autonomous mobile robots for efficient material and product transportation. The new campus will provide a safe and functional environment for close collaboration with customers and partners, allowing them to test and experiment with the latest automation innovations.

By building the Robotics Campus in Västerås, ABB aims to consolidate the area as an automation cluster, maintaining proximity to customers, suppliers, academia, and partners. The campus will contribute to the development of the ecosystem while reducing carbon footprint and promoting sustainability.

This investment aligns with ABB’s 2030 Sustainability Targets, with a focus on carbon neutrality and resource preservation. The selection of building materials, construction processes, and the use of solar panels on the roof will be carefully considered to support ABB’s sustainability goals.

In summary, ABB’s investment in the new Robotics Campus in Västerås reflects its commitment to meeting customer demand and driving market growth. The campus will enhance ABB’s capabilities in serving European customers, increase production capacity, and support the development of AI-enabled technologies. With this investment, ABB aims to strengthen its robotics and automation leadership globally and contribute to the growth of the automation industry.
