Huron Regional Medical Center Introduces Robotic-Assisted Surgery for Knee and Hip Replacements

Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) in Huron has expanded its orthopedic surgical services by incorporating robotic-assisted surgery for total knee and hip replacements. This new technology allows for more precise implant placement, resulting in enhanced comfort and improved post-operative experiences for patients.

Dr. Kevin Hofer, an orthopedic surgeon who recently joined the medical staff at HRMC, received training in robotic surgery during his residency at the University of Kansas. Dr. Hofer will be working alongside Dr. Todd Anderson to further develop the orthopedic department at HRMC.

The procedure for robotic-assisted knee and hip replacements resembles traditional surgery, but the advanced technology enables surgeons to achieve more accurate results. Before the operation, a CT scan generates a 3D model of the joint, which the surgeon utilizes to plan and personalize the approach for the replacement. During the surgery, the surgeon remains in control of the robot, with optical trackers and cameras providing precise real-time monitoring of the joint’s position.

“The robot assists us in achieving more precise implant placement and makes the necessary bony cuts,” says Dr. Kevin Hofer. “This technology enhances our existing expertise and aims to reduce pain during recovery, allowing patients to regain functionality more quickly.”

Erick Larson, the president and CEO of HRMC, expresses his excitement about bringing this innovative technology to the Huron community. He also welcomes Dr. Hofer back to the area to serve his community and expand the hospital’s orthopedic services. Larson emphasizes HRMC’s commitment to offering state-of-the-art technology and the highest level of care to the community.

To commemorate the introduction of this new technology, HRMC is hosting a reception on September 19th at the HRMC Physicians Clinic. Dr. Hofer and Dr. Anderson will give a presentation on Mako Smart Robotic total knee and hip replacements, giving attendees an opportunity to learn more about this groundbreaking surgical approach. Refreshments will be served during the event.
