Abrazo Arrowhead Campus has recently enhanced its operating room robotics with the incorporation of the Globus ExcelsiusGPS system. This advanced robotic technology is specifically designed to assist surgeons with minimally invasive and complex spinal fusion procedures. By utilizing intraoperative X-ray images and computer navigation, the robotic arm functions as a guide to surgeons, aiding in hardware placement while minimizing disruption to surrounding tissue.
Chronic back pain affects approximately 16 million adults in the United States, making it one of the most common medical concerns. In response to this prevalent issue, Abrazo Health initially introduced the robotic system at Abrazo West Campus in 2021. With its success, the technology has now been expanded to Abrazo Arrowhead Campus in 2023.
Dr. Kenneth Hood, a spine surgeon at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, explains that individuals who experience severe back and radiating leg pain and have not responded to nonoperative treatment are typical candidates for this type of surgery. The integration of new technologies in spine surgery has brought about significant advancements in surgical efficiency and patient outcomes. With the Globus system, the surgeon remains in control of the operation while the robot acts as a guide.
On the day of surgery, the system merges intraoperative fluoroscopic images of the spine with a CT scan, enabling precise planning of the optimal size and location of implants. This fusion of images allows for accurate navigation throughout the procedure, ensuring the best possible results.
The robotic GPS technology is applicable in various treatment options for spinal fusion, including posterior fusion, anterior lumbar interbody fusion, lateral lumbar interbody fusion, transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, and posterior lumbar interbody fusion.
Abrazo Arrowhead Campus is thrilled to offer this advanced option for residents of the Northwest Valley who are considering spinal fusion surgery. The addition of this robotic technology further enhances the hospital’s surgical robotics capabilities and highlights their commitment to providing exceptional healthcare to the community.
