Rockwell Automation, the global leader in industrial automation and digital transformation, has announced its definitive agreement to acquire Clearpath Robotics Inc., a Canadian company that specializes in autonomous robotics for industrial applications. This acquisition will enhance Rockwell Automation’s position in bringing the Connected Enterprise to life by leveraging the power of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).
The use of AMRs in industrial automation is gaining momentum as it offers a solution to the complex and inefficient task of transporting parts and materials to assembly lines and between manufacturing cells. This often leads to production bottlenecks. The adoption of autonomous production logistics will revolutionize workflows in manufacturing plants, resulting in significant cost reductions and improved operational efficiency.
Clearpath’s OTTO Motors Division provides AMRs and fleet management and navigation software that dramatically increase throughput and reduce costs. These AMRs ensure that components and subassemblies are in place when needed and transport finished goods to trucks or warehouses upon completion. By integrating Clearpath’s capabilities with Rockwell’s existing partnerships in fixed robotic arms, Independent Cart Technology, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Rockwell will offer a comprehensive portfolio of advanced material handling solutions that are unmatched in the industry.
According to Interact Analysis, the market for AMRs in manufacturing is expected to grow by 30% per year over the next five years, with an estimated market size of $6.2 billion by 2027. This acquisition is projected to contribute to Rockwell’s revenue growth in fiscal 2024.
By harnessing the data from Rockwell’s offerings and OTTO Motors’ AMRs, Rockwell will develop artificial intelligence-powered Software as a Service (SaaS) information management applications. These applications, such as those provided by Rockwell’s Plex and Fiix businesses, will deliver a unified solution for manufacturing, enabling autonomous execution and optimization. This unified solution will increase efficiency, allow for traceability, and facilitate real-time adjustments. The acquisition will also amplify Kalypso’s production logistics consulting practice.
With this acquisition, Rockwell Automation aims to simplify and optimize operations throughout the entire manufacturing facility by combining autonomous robots and PLC-based line control. The integration of these technologies will fulfill the long-standing industry dream of plant managers across various verticals, including automotive and consumer packaged goods, to create safer, more productive workplaces.
Clearpath Robotics, founded in 2009, initially focused on offering robotics technology to global research and development markets. In 2015, the company launched its OTTO Motors Division, paving the way for its foray into the industrial automation sector.
